Business Wire Florida office…movin’ on up!

January 26, 2012
by Laura Sturaitis, EVP Media Services & Product Strategy

I know it might get on some people’s nerves, even on a good winter’s day, to be focusing on the lucky one’s at Business Wire’s South Florida office in January, but add to that bit of geographical luck that the BW Florida team is now happily ensconced in our new, beautiful and expanded office space in Plantation, Florida. Our new office is centrally located to serve the Greater Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Palm Beach area and is just minutes away from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood airport, which allows our team to visit with our clients in Central and North Florida regularly.

Four members of the original BW Florida team have been working together for more than 20+ years. This will be our 5th move to increasingly larger offices in South Florida. The Business Wire Florida office is like many other BW bureaus which locally employ a full service newsroom, a Media Relations Specialist, our Client Services team of sales professionals, our team of HQ Online Newsroom Specialists and me, EVP of Media Services and Product Strategy, a corporate position, all under one roof. Many of the members of our team have held different roles within the company, bringing a unique skill set and breadth of experience to the task of serving Business Wire members in our local area and throughout the company. Our office really puts a face on Business Wire’s proud tradition of local service and global reach. We live it here every day!

Check out our new digs in Business Wire blue and green to match our logo, or call us at 800-700-9473. All our contact numbers stay the same; only our address has changed to 1200 South Pine Island Road, Suite 140 Plantation, FL 33324. Call us to schedule a time to come by to visit us!

Business Wire Gives Back: BW Staff Goes Back to School to Help Students Find Success

Laura Sturaitis addresses the Job Search Boot Camp at St. Thomas University, Miami, FL

Executive Vice President Laura Sturaitis spent last Thursday sharing her time and expertise with job seekers among the students, alumnae and members of the general public at her alma mater St. Thomas University in Miami, FL.  Sturaitis served as a panelist at St. Thomas’s Job Search Boot Camp.  Her presentation, “Developing and Managing Your Professional Online Brand,” sparked a lively discussion.

Many Business Wire staff, including Laura, regularly speak to college PR and Communications students as guest lecturers on a variety of industry topics from Writing for the Web to What is the Wire?  These talks help students prepare for and excel in our quickly changing industry.

“I try to impart the fact that it’s necessary to apply their wizardry using new technologies and social media to the old-school communication skills they are learning in class – good writing and grammar, identifying and building audiences through meaningful professional relationships and networking, determining the right channels for their well-crafted message and the ability to evaluate the results of their efforts in order to make adjustments,” says Sturaitis. “We always have a lot to talk about and share in class.”

Raschanda Hall, Business Wire’s Chicago-based Global Media Relations Manager, is another staff member who regularly takes her experience and skills back to school. She recently spent the afternoon with a class of Chicago State students.

“I love the opportunity to talk to college students studying my craft, ” says Hall.  “Getting just a glimpse of what life is like in the working world of public relations is something these kids can’t get from books….When I’m asked to talk to a local college class about PR, I jump at the chance. I end up getting as much out of it as the students because I’m inspired by the next generation.”

With a company wide goal of 5,000 hours of community service in honor of its 50th Anniversary, Business Wire supports employees’ efforts to volunteer by providing up to 10 hours of paid time off in 2011.

PRSA 2010: What To Do Around Town

October 12, 2010

by Danny Selnick, Vice President, Public Policy Services

Attending the PRSA 2010 International Conference? If you’re not from “inside the Beltway” you’ll surely find Washington, DC a fun-place for this year’s annual convention.

Sure, we’re all here to learn, but try to find some time to experience Washington after hours by taking a self-guided tour at night of the national monuments that line the National Mall and environs.  Beyond the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, Washington Monument and The White House, check out some of the newer and equally interesting moments including The WWII Memorial, The FDR Memorial, and the Korean War Memorial.

Not far from the Washington Hilton Hotel is the Adams Morgan neighborhood, which hosts some interesting ethnic and standard-fare restaurants in an area that’s so “un-Washington”  — from Ethiopian to Mexican and more.  You can also visit Ben’s Chili Bowl (a favorite of President Obama) that’s open into the wee hours.

South of the hotel is the Dupont Circle neighborhood, home to lots of interesting architecture, shops and several foreign embassies and missions housed in historic buildings.

Getting around in DC is easy: The Dupont Circle Metro Stop is just a few blocks from the hotel, where the Red Line can take you to Metro Center for a quick walk to the National Mall, or to catch trains to other parts of the city.

At the conference, our own Laura Sturaitis will be presenting a panel on Tuesday morning, along with Greg Jarboe, president and co-founder of SEO-PR. The session, titled “What’s the ROMI of Social Media, Online Video and Press Releases?” will take a look at which of the new PR tools delivers the highest return on marketing investment, and how to get the most from all of them.

Don’t forget to stop by and see Business Wire at Booth 201 in the Exhibitors Hall where we’ll be happy to talk to you about the latest in news distribution services and technologies, including Public Policy Services, NewsHQ (our state-of-the-art online newsroom service) and more.  While you’re there, drop your card in our fishbowl to register to win a free netbook. And we’ll even be doing some magic to entertain!

Business Wire at PRSA

November 3, 2009

The PRSA 2009 International Conference begins this Saturday, Nov. 7 in San Diego, and as always, Business Wire will be there, showing you our latest innovations in press release delivery and demonstrating how our high-tech platform beats the competitors with simultaneous delivery, integrated multimedia, superior social media capabilities and more.  Here are some of the highlights of our participation in PRSA:

  • Laura Sturaitis, SVP, Media Services and Product Strategy, will once again join forces with Greg Jarboe of SEO-PR to update their popular “What’s the ROI of Your Press Release?” session to be presented on Tuesday, Nov 10th. “Greg and I are going to share  some of the new trends we are seeing in global search, social media engagement and using multimedia to tell your story and how you can determine what is working for you,” says Laura.
  • Malcolm Atherton, account executive from our Phoenix office, will be handling our Twitter duties live from PRSA — make sure to follow @BusinessWire to get on-the-ground reports from our booth, sessions, workshops and more.  Malcolm, who is heavily involved in the PR and social media communities in Arizona, has his own very informative Twitter feed as well; get to know him before the show at @MalcolmAtherton.
  • We’ll be at Booth #73 with our “Business Wire is HD” presentation, showing you that distributing your press release over Business Wire is, well, just better.  A more attractive press release with embedded hyperlinks, optimized keywords, wider earnings tables, easily downloadable video and pictures, social media sharing . . . come see for yourself why Business Wire is the one to use.  While you’re there, enter your name in a daily drawing for a chance to win a Blu-Ray player, and pick up a special gift, too!
We look forward to seeing you all in San Diego!

Laura Sturaitis: Business Wire’s Media Queen and Kickbutt Tour Guide

September 4, 2007

It takes a special person to sport decades of wisdom and experience with the agility to climb into the crow’s nest and see what’s coming, but Business Wire’s Laura Sturaitis makes that rare combo seem pedestrian.

laura-warren1For years Laura has led us by the hand through the changing landscape of mainstream media, multimedia, new media and most recently, social media. NOTE TO LAURA: You are one able tour guide!

Laura’s can-do attitude, boundless energy, and level-headed thinking have been instrumental in bringing some of Business Wire’s most successful products to market–like our Smart News Release and EON: Enhanced Online News. And her openness to new ideas grounded in wisdom-based-on-experience constitute a killer app that’s taking Business Wire to the next place.

Congratulations to our dear friend and colleague as she tackles the newly created position of Senior Vice President Media Services & Product Strategy. None of us who know her, love her and work with her have any doubt that Laura will make this latest adventure a success.
